Licensing Information

You didn’t come this far to stop!

Aardvark Soup is committed to supporting creative, accessible theatre. All public performances of our scripts require a valid licence, whether the production is amateur, professional, educational, or community-based. This ensures that writers are fairly compensated and that performances meet the legal and ethical standards of copyright law.

Under UK copyright law (and equivalent international legislation), performing a play in front of an audience constitutes a public performance, even if the audience is small or tickets are not sold. A licence grants you the right to perform the work legally and helps ensure continued support for the writers and creatives behind the material.

We aim to keep our licensing process fair and flexible. Fees are tailored to suit different types of productions and take into account the following:

  • Number of performances

  • Venue capacity

  • Type of group (e.g. school, amateur society, fringe company, professional)

Fees for small-scale or non-commercial performances typically start at £30 per performance, with discounts available for schools and community organisations. Larger or ticketed productions may be subject to a higher rate, which will be quoted individually.

All monologues in A Chair, A Light, A Voice are free to use in educational settings, including:

  • School drama lessons

  • College and university projects

  • Drama school showcases

  • Self-tapes and audition reels

  • Youth theatre rehearsals

These pieces were written to help actors develop their voice, gain experience, and build performance portfolios. No licence is needed for classroom use or private recordings. We simply ask for credit and love to hear when students find success with our work.

Just ask for the free PDF which contains monologues for all ages from young voices to mature actors.

If you plan to publicly stage a monologue (e.g., as part of a showcase or festival), please let us know and credit Aardvark Soup and the writer, Mark Coltman, no fee will apply, but we’d love to know where it’s being performed!
